Gopika Hrudayam – The Heart of a Gopi

A Musical

This dance drama is based on a book ‘The Heart of a Gopi’ written 90 years ago by Raihana Tyabji. It is the story of Princess Sharmila who became a Gopi.

Tyrant king Kamsa attacked the province where Sharmla lived. Her father, before fleeing his domain, got her married to his commander-in chief who took her away to safety to his home in Brindavan- the land of Krishna.

Sharmila met the Gopis, the greatest devotees of Krishna. She heard the name of Krishna which stole into her heart. The flute, the Lord’s voice and laughter, deepened her attraction and the longing to see him.

The Lord finally graced her with his Darshan. Her husband the commander could not understand her love for Krishna. Sharmila told him that her love for Krishna deepened her love for him, for Krishna was the embodiment of love himself.

It is a story of a couple who get bound together in their love and devotion to God. It is the story of how the soul, by the grace of God, turns into a Gopi, surrendering to him lives at his feet ever after. The heart of a Gopi is the Lord’s abode.
